I own a cleaning company that has been enjoying great success over the last few years. I decided it was time to move out of my home office into an actual office location open to new and existing clients. I didn’t have any trouble finding a great office location in Brisbane, but once I found the office, I realized how little I knew about Interior Design. I wanted clients to get the impression that my company was very professional and capable. The designers at Ikcon helped me design my office and fill it with durable, functional furniture, and I never even went near my budget limit. Now, potential clients can visit the office for a free estimate, and I can also sell my own cleaning supplies from my office, as well. I have seen a huge increase in new business, and I am getting a lot more large commercial jobs, as well. I know it is because the company seems extremely professional with the new, beautifully designed office.

Maximise the Potential of Your New Home with Clever Design and Great Accessories
When I saw the generous proportion of our 1930s detached house forthe first time, I knew I had found the right home for our family. Icouldn’t wait to tell my husband about it. I could see it had the potential to be the family home we were looking fora bigger version of the house we were living in, which was a three-storeyRegency terraced house. I waspregnant with my second son at the time and Isoon realised that all the stairs in a three-storey house would become an issuewith two young children. The property was empty throughout when we moved in. Wehad a clean slate to work from and although we had lots of ideas initially, wewanted to live in the house for a while to make sure we were making the right decisions. We lived in the property for three years before we started to put our plans into action. The planning stage was incredibly straightforward because we had a clear vision of what we wanted. An architect translated our
ideas and requirements into drawings. We employed a local building firm to do the work and the project management was shared between the builder and the architect. The biggest challenge was living in the property when the work was
going on. At one point we lived without a kitchen and bathroom for six weeks. The project took eight months to complete but would have been quicker if it hadn’t -ceiling cupboards that conceal a fridge, freezer, coffee maker and
larder. Sometimes a new kitchen can look a little sterile, so our architect advised us to add a few been for the unfortunate discovery of a broken waste pipe when the foundations for the extension were being prepared. A new system had to be fitted before the building work could proceed. At one point it felt like the house was marooned
by a moat as the builders had to dig a trench all the way around the house! Fortunately, the architect had worked a contingency plan into the total cost of the build and the couple were covered for the work. My favourite room is the
open-plan kitchen and dining room. I love cooking for family and friends and it’s very easy to keep clean. There was a traditional kitchen in place when we bought the property but we were keen to have something more contemporary. We
already had the range cooker and we decided matt black kitchen units would go really with it! We choose floor-to accessories to give it a lived-in appeal. We chose some scented candles by our favourite makes, such as yankee candles, true grace candles and Voluspa candles and very soon the kitchen began to appear more homely. A breakfast bar houses the hob, and a stylish cooker hood hangs above. I wanted to keep the work surfaces as clear as possible. All electric sockets are hidden away inside the cupboards and we had a boiling water tap installed so there’s no need for a kettle. The glass doors along the width of the dining room connect the inside of the house with the garden. We wanted to be able to see the children playing out in the garden while we were in the kitchen The main purpose of building the
extension was to balance up the proportions of the property. We knew we wanted
to create a contemporary open-plan living space and a lot of our furniture would fit in with that style. The kitchen and dining room were made into one open-plan space and the size of the family bathroom was increased so that a
modern suite could be fitted. The old bathroom was tiny and didn’t suit a large family home. Now it fits in more harmoniously. We also added a dressing room and contemporary en suite to the main bedroom upstairs and again have
accessorised it with lovely towels in bright colours as well as a few candles and the odd reed diffuser which gives an elegant touch. On the walls we have hung a few vintage posters of Italian holiday destination which we find
contrast nicely with the rest of the bathrooms décor. As a result of the changes made to the first floor, both the family bathroom and landing had lost windows, so we added a sun light in both spaces. It’s amazing how much light comes down a small metal tube with a plastic disc on the top. It was one of our more expensive decisions but
the difference in light is really worth it. There is nothing worse than spending a lot of time and energy – not to say money – on doing up your home only to find the results are not what you hoped for, so we are glad we pushed the boat
out. We also added a roof lantern to the dressing room, effectively flooding the area with natural light.. We designed the decked area with raised beds to create an outside room. The builders landscaped the garden and fitted the decking
in super-quick time. From the beginning we had a clear vision of the changes we wanted to make and we are very happy with what we have done. The children really enjoy the open-plan design of the ground floor. We are particularly
proud of the decisions we have made because we didn’t visit any showrooms – everything was chosen from samples. At the time it felt like a risk to do it that way but now that we are happy with the results we have gained a greater
confidence in our decision-making.

The elements are one¡¯s tools in as much as carving tools are basic to a sculptor. The elements of interior designing consist of color, line, space, form and texture. The principles of design revolve around the manipulation of these elements. There are five principles of design and the basic among them that governs all others is balance.
Balance is the visual equilibrium in a room. It refers on the proper placement of the elements within the room. A well-balanced room provides an overwhelming sense of peace and a feeling of completeness. It considers the visual weight of objects to create equilibrium. There are two types of balance, formal and informal. Formal balance or symmetrical balance uses exactly the same objects producing the mirror image effect. Informal balance incorporates a variety of elements having the same visual weights to deliver a warmer more subtle casual feeling.
