Vodafone sack manager after fraud probe Mobile phone giant Vodafone has sacked a senior manager in the Republic of Ireland after an alleged €1m fraud was exposed, it was confirmed today. The multinational said an employee at its headquarters in Dublin had been dismissed in March following an investigation into allegations he used company funds to buy goods from suppliers. A colleague reported the manager to a senior director in the finance department last year. Following the internal inquiry he was sacked and the garda fraud squad called in. “An employee was dismissed in March 2007 and as the matter is subject to legal proceedings Vodafone cannot comment further,” Vodafone confirmed in a statement. It is understood the senior manager, employed in the finance department, may have been buying products from suppliers in the name of Vodafone and selling them on himself. The alleged fraud may have totalled €1m but it will not have any impact on customer accounts in Ireland or abroad. A garda spokesman confirmed an investigation had been launched by the fraud squad. “We are investigating an allegation of the misappropriation of funds,” he said. “It’s at the very early stages of the investigation and there have been no arrests made at this stage.” Detectives in the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation in Dublin are heading up the inquiry. In 2006, Vodafone reported after-tax profits of €304m. The company employs around 55,000 people and at the end of last year Vodafone had around 198 million customers worldwide.
